Finding our Dreams in a Systemized World

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Summary:

We need to be aware of our dreams; otherwise, we are like a pixel in a system: Its distortion field influences us. The economic system becomes a mechanism that determines the opportunities of individuals who go through that system, with what kind of education, work, and position they end up in society’s fabric. If we are not aware of what we truly want, then it seems that we become a function determined by the possibilities and systems around us. Hence, we should not be distracted and choose the visible options before us, but act on our dreams!

Why do I Write?

My dream is to create something that has a positive impact, and to do so; I would like to find people with shared interests to team up and accomplish something together! By publishing parts of my journal, I aim to connect with people and inspire!

I believe sharing thoughts is enriching because doing so can create meaningful connections for life. If sharing the following ideas and sometimes intimate stories can inspire people to follow their dreams, I would be delighted!

Like a Pixel in a System

The Freedom to Find our Dreams

Do you sometimes wish that you could travel back in time and make other decisions with the knowledge of what you know now? When I look at old photos, this thought might come up. I wish that time wouldn’t go by so quickly that I could make some decisions again or experience things over. Translated to the present, this is a mirror of my current wishes and where I believe I could have implemented them. It means that I would like to make better decisions and that I would like to be more knowledgeable to work on my dreams and wishes. The biggest hurdle to follow my dreams is within me to have the freedom to be aware of what I truly want and to act on it. In retrospect, I use this freedom less than I wanted; there are days in my life that passed without working on my dreams, where I thought that I was working indirectly to fulfill my wishes or where I was distracted by Computer games, movies, parties, by the phone, etc. sometimes leaving me with some kind of hangover or regret of how I used my time.

I asked myself, when do we not only have fun but also enrich our lives, and how can we live to work on our wishes and dreams and don’t just let our days go by? What is it that you wish if you could go back for the last ten years and live them again? What would you do? Although, according to science, time is relative, in contrast to the constant speed of light, i.e., time is not constant under all conditions, I have not yet had the opportunity to travel back in time. But, the world we live in is a simulation of our senses — so we can try to travel back in our minds to reflect and then project our desires onto the present time. And even if we could travel through time, there is always only one moment in which we can act, which is our now!

There is more potential within us, and we have more possibilities than we can realize within our lifetime. Therefore, I think we should be aware of what we really want in order to achieve our potential where it matters. Then we have the freedom from all these possibilities to pursue those relevant to us. If we are not sure about what we want, then we are like a pixel in a system: We are influenced by its distortion field and adhere to the opening times of the shops, events, activities that we attend, and by other possibilities which are offered to us. We go to work at certain times, take some transport or travel to another place at a particular time and so on. The economic system becomes a mechanism that determines the opportunities of individuals who go through that system, with what kind of education, work, and position they end up in society’s fabric. If we are not aware of what we truly want, then it seems that we become a function determined by the possibilities and systems around us — as if we are just a pixel that moves in an optimized system while losing ourselves. The system is not optimal for us because what we want ourselves has not been optimized, but what is optimal for the processes within a larger system. Every system that sustains itself replicates those elements that are optimal for the system to continue to exist. It is the nature of any evolving system that elements that do not support the perpetuation of the system cease to exist. It can be aggregated that what would actually be optimal for the individual is not optimal for a larger system within which the individuals live. Therefore, there can be a discrepancy that we live in a system that, with all its possibilities, distracts us from what we really want. Hence, the insight for me is that in our system, freedom is not just to choose between different options but to choose what is necessary for ourselves, and that is where we often go wrong. Why else is it that we often spend time on things that make us less fulfilled or less happy? In general, is it maybe that humans do not deal so well with abundance, as they originally came from a time of shortages? As it seems now, science is supporting the view that too many options make us less happy. Let’s not use our time for unnecessary things that we don’t really want, as we are less free to the extent that we do things that do not fulfill us.

If we think of our life as a vector going in a specific direction, then I believe it is particularly important to choose one that will take us on a path that includes what we really want to do in life. In my life, I have often found that I just haven’t done this! Various things stopped me from doing it. Often, I didn’t dare to go in the “right” direction because it entailed a certain risk. I said to myself that I had to finish this or that thing before I could start. I especially realized this when I failed my master’s and questioned the previous path. It takes some time to figure out what we exactly want to do.

Some people might think that they’ll build up some money, knowledge, or other resources first and only then do what they actually want to do. Let’s take a vector as early as possible that travels in the direction we want to go. In the end, we can only do what we truly want if we deal with it. If we save money or other resources, it is a way to prevent ourselves from taking the risk of following our dreams; it might be an excuse. It might just be that we a scared to take the first step; after all, if our dream doesn’t work, then we are not even left with a dream, but as long as we are not trying, we at least still have the dream and haven’t risk to fail. But there is a difference between imagining our dream and experiencing it. Only when we experience it, we can truly feel if this is actually our dream. The earlier we experience it, the more sure we can actually feel about it. This feeling is very important. When we have the chance to experience our dreams, I think we should give it a try, especially when it’s on a small scale, so we do not spend valuable time building up our resources just to find out that our imagined dream is actually not as interesting after all. Imagine if you had done what you want to do now with the limited resources available, for the last two years, where could you be?
